Selby Christmas Fatstock Show & Sale Sunday 7-Dec 2008

The decision to hold the annual event for the second year on a Sunday was vindicated by an excellent show of all classes of stock and a tremendous turnout of spectators which would have been very difficult to cope with on a regular market day.

The cattle judge, Alec Traves of Meat Wholesales A & J Traves from York had an unenviable task of sorting through 40 of some of the county’s finest cattle and notably among them Andrew White’s Countryside Live recent winner but he found his champion in Featherstone farmer Stephen Hough’s Limousin cross steer but he was then pipped when bought by J Penny & Sons Wholesalers from Rawdon, Leeds for £1,526 at £2.55p/kg. The reserve, Alec awarded to another regular supporter L Bamforth & Sons, again with Limousin X heifer which made the icy trip down from Wainstalls, Halifax all the more worthwhile and with the judge this time buying at £1,308 (£2.28/kg). The champion also collected the SAI Global FABBL award.

The exceptional quality of young Bulls also gave Alec a fair task with the lineout eventually being dominated by Bob Hyde of Wakefield, bought by the Cleveland Meat Company at £1,271 but with the awards shared with runner up R S & E J Longden, Chinley, High Peak, Derbys.

.

The strong pig classes were judged by Gavin Boocock, Butchers, Fridaythorpe who didn’t take long to find for Raymond Branford’s champion and an exceptional pen of cutters and who took home the Bartle Cup to Kellingley, for 8th year running. They will find their way to Richard Haigh’s Mirfield Farm Shop at a cost of £140 each. John Evans from Spaldington deservedly gained the first prize in the bacon class.

Local family butcher Roy Parkin of Parkin Butchers of Crowle and Howden awarded the sheep champion for the C Clubley Trophy to the regular consignors B & M E Craven of Kexby with a pen of Texel cross lambs which he went on to buy at £116 per head. Roy’s reserve was awarded to P Farmery, Gilberdyke.
